In order to remedy the critical deficit in basic data and understanding of the hydrodynamic functioning of the Congo River, the University of Kinshasa through the Department of Natural Resources Management of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with partner institutions including the Universities of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Rhodes in South Africa, Bristol and Leeds in the United Kingdom, as well as the Régie des Voies Fluviales (RVF) of the Democratic Republic of Congo, carried out for two months, between July and September 2017, a scientific expedition on the Middle Reach of the Congo River and on the Kasaï River.
Under the direction of Doctor Raphaël TSHIMANGA MUAMBA, expert hydrologist, specialist in the Congo Basin and Professor at the University of Kinshasa, the work aimed to carry out detailed investigations on the hydraulics and hydrology of this second largest river in the world, with multiple economic and environmental benefits (Navigation, Clean Energy, Irrigation, Fishing, Drinking water supply and sanitation, and Environmental regulation).
